The numbers are frightening: Seventy arsons in 13 months; one every six days. And there are no guarantees there won't be more, despite six arrests.

Two fires early Saturday morning in the 100 block of Hope Avenue and the 600 block of Madison Street were deliberately set, according to the Chester County Arson Task Force. Both fires were extinguished before any major property damage. Reportedly, a description of the arsonist was provided to police.

The fire on Hope Avenue was confined to a trash container. A garden hose was used to extinguish lawn furniture located next to the home in the 600 block of Madison Street. The fires took place despite both homes being well lit.

Of the 70 arsons, the majority have occurred in the West End, according to fire officials. One of those fires resulted in the death of an elderly Polish woman who had emigrated to the United States after surviving a Nazi forced labor camp. Property damage has been estimated at $2 million.

Last month two men, Mark Gilliam, 20, of West Bradford, and Roger Barlow Jr., 19, of Downingtown were charged on arson charges. The two men were friends and former classmates. Barlow was charged with nine counts of arson, including the Fleetwood Street fire that destroyed 15 homes and displaced 18 families. Gilliam was charged only with the fire contained to the mens room at the Happy Days Bistro in Thorndale.

Since the pairs arrest the arsons have continued. Last month seven school buses were set ablaze in West Brandywine Township. And last weekend two homes were destroyed in the 200 block of Valley Road.
