While the investigation of an armed robbery at a West Goshen hotel this week is continuing, District Attorney Joe Carroll is wasting no time saying the fatal shooting of one of the robbers was justified.

"While the investigation will continue, in light of the deadly force used agains the officer and circumstances of the robbery, the use of deadly force was justified," Carroll said in a press release issued by his office.

According to the DA's Office, only one West goshen officer discharged his weapons, striking and mortally wounding Dashan White, 22, of the 300 block of Buchanan Drive, Coatesville. A second suspect, Calvin Haines Jr., of 25 South Forth Avenue, also of Coatesville, was apprehended at the scene. Haines is a ninth-grade student at the 9-10 Center in Coatesville.

The district attorney's office gave the following account of the incident:

At approximately 4:28 am on Wednesday, Aug 6, uniformed members of the West Goshen Police Department responded to a 911 call originating from an 'open mike' cell phone. The cell phone was believed to be active in the area of Route 202 and Matlack St. in West Goshen Township. Conversation on the phone indicated that an ongoing active robbery was occurring.

Officers responding to the call checked the premises of the Microtel Hotel and found the lobby area to be unstaffed. Further investigation by police resulted in shots fired at police from the Front Desk area. Police returned fire forcing two suspects to escape from an adjacent ground floor window into the outside parking lot.

Moments later in the parking lot of the hotel, one suspect later identified as Dashan White, fired a handgun at the police. One of the officers returned fire striking White.  Responding medical personnel at the scene determined White was apparently killed from at least one gunshot wound.
