Coatesville police nab two more suspected arsonists
by Allen Davis Staff Writer Posted: Wednesday, 17 Oct. 10 a.m. In less than two weeks since George Donkewicz was charged with the arson-related death of an 83-year-old Polish immigrant who survived Hitler's labor camps, Coatesville police have arrested two other individuals on arson charges. City officials said Leroy McWilliams, 23, of Coatesville, was arrested on charges related to fire set at a home in the 100 block of Franklin Street. No injuries were reported. A second, unrelated fire at a garage at Palmer Avenue and South Fifth Avenue resulted in the arrest of a juvenile who is a junior firefighter with the Coatesville Fire Department. For the past two years Coatesville has been plagued by a series of arsons, most of which were extinguished by city firefighters before doing serious damage. But last week Irene Kempest died when her Strode Avenue home was set ablaze. Donkewicz was charged with setting that fire. He was arrested after police responded to a fire a few days in the same block of the Kempest home. Monday night council praised the police officers responsible for nabbing Donkewicz. Said City Manager Harry Walker, "This is a really happy time . . . because we have had do many threats to our community." "These men did a fine job," said police Lt. Julius Canale. Police Chief William Matthews said police used undercover officers and special arson investigating strategies that resulted in Donkewicz's arrest.
