When Coatesville council President Marty Eggleston characterized the outgoing council as a do-nothing council that killed redevelopment in the city, he knew there would be backlash.

It came at Monday night's council meeting when Council Member Kurt Schenk defended the Bloc of Four and blasted Eggleston for being the obstructionist. And, he offered another reason for Eggleston's outrage

"Some council members are just mad they couldn't get the votes to fire (City Manager Harry) Walker," Schenk said, referring to the work session prior to October 26 council meeting."Some council members aren't man enough to say it to his face."

At the Oct. 26 council meeting, both Walker and Solicitor Andrew Lehr were asked to leave the executive session held behind closed doors. However, Council Member Ed Simpson said there was no discussion to fire walker. "We just wanted to evaluate his performance," said Simpson.

Schenk continued that it was those council members in opposition to the Block of Four who were dragging their feet. "I personally think their should be a lot of soul searching going on," he said.

Eggleston didn't respond to Schenk's accusations, instead sitting quietly and simply smiling at him.

But at the Oct. 26 meeting, Eggleston was quite candid. "This council has wasted four years. I'm frankly disgusted." He continued: We are no further ahead (on redevelopment) that we were when this council came in. This council set us back to square one."

And, Eggleston said he wasn't without blame. "I'm including me in this," he said.

All four members of the so-called Bloc of Four -- council members Robin Scott, Patsy Ray, Kareem Johnson and Schenk -- will not be returning to council next year. Schenk and Ray were defeated in the Democrat primary. Scott and Johnson decided not to seek reelection.

When the four were elected the city was looking at a $700 million revitalization. However, shortly after the they were elected, that nation went into an economic nose dive.
